Library Policies

Who Can Use the Library?

Any resident of Valley Park may register for a library card.  Registration and borrowing privileges are free.  Valley Park Library belongs to the Municipal Library Consortium of St. Louis County (MLC).  This is a nine-member cooperative of independent libraries in St. Louis County.  A valid library card can be used at any member library:

Brentwood Public Library - 8775 Eulalie
Ferguson Municipal Public Library - 35 N. Florissant Road
Kirkwood Public Library - 140 E. Jefferson
Maplewood Public Library - 7550 Lohmeyer Avenue
Richmond Heights Memorial Library - 8001 Dave Avenue
Rock Hill Public Library - 9741 Manchester Avenue
University City Public Library - 6701 Delmar Blvd.
Valley Park Community Library - 320 Benton Street
Webster Groves Public Library - 301 Lockwood Avenue

The MLC libraries also offer inter-library loan.  If you request an item from any MLC library our delivery service will deliver requested items to your library (usually within two days).

The MLC libraries also enjoy metro-wide reciprocal lending with St. Louis Public Library, St. Louis County Library, and St. Charles City/County Library.  Valley Park residents may get free cards to borrow materials at any of these libraries.

Loan Period

All circulating materials may be checked out for two weeks with the exception of DVDs.  DVDs are checked out for seven days.

Lost or Damaged Materials

Patrons who lose, severely damage, or fail to return materials will be assessed the replacement cost of the item(s).  Failure to return items may result in the account being sent to collection.

Internet and Computer Use

Patrons must sign a Computer and Internet Statement form.  Children under the age of 18 must have parental permission to use the Inernet.

The Library staff is able to provide limited assistance for Internet use.  Assistance can only be given as staff time and expertise allow, and may be limited to startup.

A color printer is networked to all computers.  Copy charges are 10 cents for black and white copies and 20 cents for colored copies.

Ethical use.  Internet computers may not be used for illegal or unethical purposes.  This includes, but is not limited to:  harassment of others, libeling or slandering other users, damage of equipment or software, disruption or unauthorized monitoring of elecronic communications, unauthorized copying of copyright-protected material, or any action prohibited by local, state, or federal law.

Inappropriate images.  The library assumes the responsibility for maintaining an environment conducive to use by patrons of all ages.  We therefore ask that patrons not display offensive graphics at any time.  Deliberate accessing of pornography will result in immediate termination of computer use for a month.  A second offense will result in permanent loss of computer use.

Disruptive Patrons and Unattended Children

Patrons are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that will not distrub others.  Food, running, loud talking, and horseplay are not allowed.  Those whose behavior is disruptive or whose language is offensive will be asked to leave the library.

Parents are asked not to leave preschool or early elementary children alone at the library, except to attend appropriate library programs.  Children not picked up at closing time will be remanded to the City police for their own safety.
